Doris Food & Wine Gala in Sunrise

Have you gotten your tickets for the Doris Food & Wine Gala in Sunrise yet? We are delighted to be hosting this event in support of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and hope that you will join us. Since September is Blood Cancers Awareness month, we’re excited to be doing in store fundraising at our registers as well! In the past, we’ve been able to raise over $5,000 with the help of our valued customers. With our gala event, we hope to help the foundation reach even bigger goals and spread awareness. For every ticket sold, $10 will be donated to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society and each guest will receive a $10 credit towards their wine purchase throughout the night.

  • “Toasting” a glass of wine originally started in ancient Rome. They were continuing the Greek tradition of ‘toasting to health’ but instead, started dropping toasted bread into each wineglass to even out any acidity or undesirable flavors in the wine.
  • The red hue of red wine is caused by the fermentation process that extracts a red color from the grape skins. White wines are not fermented with their skins intact.

Tips for Wine Tasting & Drinking


  • The smell of a young wine is considered the ‘aroma’ while mature wines offer a ‘bouquet’.
  • Always hold the wine glass at the stem. Holding the bowl can cause the wine to heat up.
  • Swirling the wine in your glass encourages the release of aromas.
  • Don’t fill the wine glass more than a third of the ways full in order to allow the aromas to collect and not spill while swirling.
  • The best wine glasses for tasting are subtly curved at the rim to contain the aroma of the wine. The thinner the glass and finer the rim, the better for winetasting.
  • When tasting your wine, hold it in your mouth for a couple moments before swallowing or spitting out in order to indulge in the aftertaste. A good wine will have one that lingers, while a          wine that’s not as good will have a very short aftertaste.
  • The kitchen is not a good place to store wine! Often times it’s too hot. The refrigerator tends to be too cold.
  • Traditionally, it’s common to first serve lighter wines and increase heaviness throughout the meal. White is typically served before red and younger wines before older, dry before sweet.
  • Serving temperatures for white wine are around 45-50 degrees, while the temperatures for reds are between 50-60 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Never store wine standing up. It’s best for wine to be placed on its side so the cork doesn’t become dry and allow air inside the bottle.

Landana 1000 Day Gouda


Made from cow’s milk and originally from Holland, this cheese is solid in texture, golden in color and has a distinctively zesty nature and nutty flavor. Best served with ripened pears or peaches topped with fresh mint and honey, shredded over steamed vegetables or salads and paired with a Cabernet Sauvignon or dry white wine.

Hailing from Italy, this cow’s milk cheese is firm and aromatic. The sharp flavor it brings awakens the taste buds and adds distinct flavor when shredded over garden salads or steamed vegetables. Great pairings are sopressata, prosciutto, roasted peppers, olives with a bottle of Chianti, a dry red or dry white wine.

Sartori Sarvecchio Parmesan


America’s own Wisconsin parmesan cheese is made from cow’s milk and has a semi-hard to hard texture when aged to perfection. The flavor is fruity with hints of roasted caramel. It’s best served grated, shaved or shredded over pasta, soups, salads and rice as well as a table cheese. Great with prosciutto, sopressata, pears, and walnuts. Pair with a Chianti, Port or Sherry.

Prima Donna


This semi-hard cow’s cheese from Holland has a flavor resembling a combination of aged gouda and parmesan. It’s a great table cheese and goes well with ripe pears, peaches, grapes and honeydew. Pair with robust red wines such as Cabernet Sauvignon.

Sartori Rosemary

Olive Oil Asiago


This Wisconsin cheese is made from first cream cow’s milk and is semi-hard in texture when aged 6 to 9 months. It’s buttery flavor is enhanced by gentle notes of rosemary and olive oil. This cheese is great when melted over French bread topped with bacon and sliced tomatoes. Served with cubed with olives, sundried tomatoes, roasted peppers and dried sausage, it pairs best with a Chianti, Sherry or Chardonnay.

Sartori Bellavitano Espresso


This cheese is made from an Italian recipe and handcrafted in the US. It’s cow’s milk hard cheese that’s aged slowly to obtain desired sharpness. Its flavor is robust and the exterior is hand rubbed with espresso coffee. It’s served best drizzled with olive oil alongside sopressata, nuts, pastries, dark chocolate and apricots. Pairs well with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Merlot.

Now that you’ve brushed up on your cheese and wine knowledge, you’ll be all set for our fantastic fundraiser. We will be serving a full Italian style buffet that includes dessert! We will also have fantastic cheeses to be pair with over 100 different selections of wine to choose from. Since this is a private event, those who will be joining us will have access to exclusive shopping during gala hours. Shop any department of our store while you enjoy your night, we will be fully staffed in every department to make sure you have everything you need.
